But what exactly can you do in JB? In this carefully crafted 1-day itinerary, I’ll guide you through some of the must-visit spots and experiences that will make your day in JB truly unforgettable. Here is a 1-day JB itinerary of fun-filled activities and good food.

1. Have breakfast like a local at Yummy Nasi Lemak House

Indulge in a hearty Malaysian breakfast experience at Yummy Nasi Lemak House, situated in Taman Abad. Delight in the classic Nasi Lemak Basic (RM10.50), featuring aromatic coconut rice complemented by sambal, a fried egg, roasted peanuts, and papadum.

If you find yourself craving more, they also offer options like Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah (RM14.50) and Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang (RM16.50). For those seeking a lighter choice, consider sampling the Mee Siam Basic (RM10.50), which includes a fried egg, sambal, and papadum.

2. Visit the oldest structures in JB

In a town with such a rich history, one should not pass up the opportunity to immerse themselves in it. As stated in its name, the Johor Ancient Temple is one of the oldest religious structures in JB. Built in the 1870s, this temple still remains a symbol of unity among the 5 Chinese ethnic groups and houses 5 deities — 1 for each ethnic group.

Take a leisurely walk around the temple premises and admire the stunning and lively murals that adorn the walls of this ancient structure. When you step inside, you’ll immediately feel the tranquil ambience enveloping you as you venture deeper into the temple.

While you wander and absorb the surroundings, be sure to explore the artefacts housed within. The ancient century-old bronze bell, incense burner, and wooden tablet have been carefully preserved over time. Much of the temple’s cultural design remained intact during the renovation in 1994.

3. Visit the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque

Just across the Zaharah Botanic Gardens lies the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, a hilltop mosque with English Victorian architecture and Moorish elements. Constructed between 1892 and 1900 under the direction of Sultan Abu Bakar, this beautiful mosque is still open during prayer times.

Perched atop Ledang Hill, tourists can relish the panoramic vista of the Johor Straits and glimpse our neighbouring nation, Singapore. Be sure to observe the nearby structures which also showcase British architectural influences.

Please remember to dress modestly when planning a visit to this mosque. Non-Muslims are permitted to admire the mosque’s exterior only. It’s recommended to steer clear of visiting during the lunch hour on Fridays, as the mosque experiences its peak traffic due to Friday prayers.

4. Visit Johor Royal Botanical Gardens

Tucked within the regal grounds of Istana Besar Johor, the newly opened Johor Royal Botanical Gardens is an understated gem awaiting discovery. Spanning 56 acres, this lush expanse is a living museum of flora for your eyes (and the ‘gram!).

You’re invited to wander through themed gardens like the Rainforest Dipterocarp stretch, the soothing Orchid Garden, and even a Fernarium that feels like it was plucked from the pages of a Victorian explorer’s diary. The grounds are also dotted with graceful architectural landmarks like the Bukit Zaharah Castle, Bukit Bintang, and the Japanese House. 

Entry fees are at RM2 for Malaysian adults and seniors, and RM30 for non-Malaysians. Children under 5 and persons with disabilities enter free of charge. Do note: all tickets must be booked online in advance as this garden doesn’t do walk-ins.

5. Buy banana cake from a 106-year-old bakery

First opened in 1919, Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory has garnered a reputation for baking the best banana cake in JB. This small shop is often seen with long queues of people eagerly waiting to get their hands on the freshly baked goods.

Baked in a wood-fired oven, the soft and fluffy Banana Cake (RM13) comes with 10 slices per box. Although it may seem like a lot, most locals buy multiple boxes at a time. If you’re visiting on a Tuesday morning, don’t miss the chance to purchase the exclusive Butter Cake (RM16) and Coffee Cake (RM16).

This bakery also sells freshly baked bread. Choose between Coconut, Red Bean, Peanut, and Kaya, all priced at RM6 for 4 buns. You can also try the Otak-Otak Bun and Butter Bun, both at RM6 for 2 pieces.

After a fun-filled afternoon, head over to Restaurant Teck Sing for a nice lunch. This family-owned restaurant serves the best Chinese cuisine at a reasonable price.

Indulge in their signature Paper Baked Chicken featuring tender herbal chicken paired with a delicious herbal sauce. If you like seafood, I recommend sampling the Curry Fish Head or the Shark Fin with Crab Meat Soup.

Choose from the restaurant’s variety of prawn dishes like the Oats Prawn, Indonesian Style Curry Prawn, or Drunken Prawn in Claypot. Other menu options to choose from include Thai Style Deep-Fried Squid, Sizzling Beancurd and Stewed Pork with Yam.

9. Take a break with a cuppa Joe & slice(s) of heaven at the famous Nimmies Pastry Cafe

Set in a 2-storey bungalow in Taman Melodies, Nimmies Pastry Cafe offers more than just coffee and croissants — but that’s what we’re focusing on today!

Let’s start with the Pistachio Supreme Croissant (RM19). It’s a cube-shaped beauty crowned with a swirl of white chocolate frosting and a dusting of crushed pistachios. Pair it with the Biscoff Buttercream Latte (RM27), which comes rimmed with crushed Biscoff crumbs and garnished with a Lotus biscuit and a fragrant sprig of thyme. 

For something zesty and refreshing, the Shaker Lemon Pie Croissant (RM18) deserves your attention. And finally, the Kinder Bueno Cromboloni (RM24), which is a circular croissant drizzled with chocolate, topped with creamy Bueno cheese, and finished with an actual piece of Kinder Bueno like the cherry on top of an already sinful dessert.

10. Dinner at It Roo Cafe

Situated along Jalan Dhoby, It Roo Cafe has been delighting diners with its top-notch chicken chop since 1961. This nostalgic kopitiam attracts both locals and tourists, all eager to savour the renowned Chicken Chop (RM19.50), which can be prepared either grilled or fried, based on your preference.

You can enhance your chicken chop experience by selecting either black pepper sauce or mushroom sauce, served alongside crispy fries and coleslaw. For those with hearty appetites, consider the Chicken Chop with 2 eggs (RM22), which offers the same choices of sauces, fries, coleslaw, and two impeccably fried eggs, just like the traditional chicken chop.

11. Indulge in dessert at Yamada Beancurd

Following dinner, treating yourself to more dessert is a must (right?). I highly suggest paying a visit to Yamada Beancurd to savour the authentic beancurd offered by this iconic food truck. However, it’s important to note that their operation is limited to just 4 hours, so make sure to act promptly!

Opt for your preferred beancurd flavour from these selections: Pandan (RM4), Pure Gula Melaka (RM4), Pandan White Sugar (RM4) or White Sugar (RM4). Elevate the taste experience by adding various toppings, including peach gum (RM3), freshly-made black sugar pearls (RM2), red bean (RM2), grass jelly (RM2), corn (RM2), or sweet potato balls (RM2).

What better way to disguise yourself as a local than go lepak-ing at the pasar malams? Pasar Karat, also known as Bazar JB, is one of the hottest night markets in town. Opening its doors from 6pm to 2am, this is the place for you to be if you’re looking for the authentic late-night local experience (one of many!).

Like other Malaysian pasar malams, Pasar Karat is teeming with pop-up stores selling essentials like thrifted clothing, sports shoes, bags and purses — all at a cheap price! Try your hand at haggling for even more discounts (if you’re confident). Satiate your late night munchies with street food and snacks sold along the road, such as takoyaki, BBQ skewers, and air balang.

Open till 1am, KAO STORE at Eco Palladium is the perfect place to turn to when the cravings hit after dark, where smoky skewers and an ice-cold drink make the perfect evening ritual.

Ease into your night with their more indulgent offerings, featuring the Kabayaki Salmon Belly (RM19.80 for 3 skewers) — richly glazed and melts with each bite, while the Grilled King Prawn (RM46.80) offers plump, savoury bites that are best savoured slowly.

Vegetables come to play, too, if you wanna eat ‘healthy’ to end your day! The Grilled Shiitake, Charred Leek, and Long Bean (all RM3.80 each) are great options. Don’t skip the fun sides: Fried Lotus Chips (RM5.00 for 3) which is undeniably the crowd favourite.
