Third-gen hawker Delonix Tan, 27, who’s in the midst of taking over the well-known SanDai Fishball business, opened his own yong tau foo shop at myVillage in Serangoon Gardens earlier this July. At SanDai Yong Tau Foo, one thing stands out: the fishballs are priced at $1 each, noticeably higher than the usual $0.50 to $0.80 at most yong tau foo stalls.
But despite the steeper price, people still buy them — and many return. 8days.sg catches up with Delonix, once an ITE student who got expelled and now the next in line to carry his family’s 60-plus-year hawker legacy, to find out why he believes his fishballs are worth the price.
To do his part, he documents his hawker life online. “Hopefully it will inspire younger people to give this career a shot if they’re interested,” Delonix smiles. “I think that in Singapore, blue collar jobs are still not very glamorous, so people are not very open to the idea [of being a hawker]. But I hope documenting my daily life will show people you can be cool being a hawker and it can lead to a very fulfilling life.”
SanDai Yong Tau Foo is located at myVillage, #B1-23/24, 1 Maju Avenue, Serangoon Garden Way, S556679. Open Tue to Sun 10.30am-7.30pm, closed Mon. More info via Instagram.
