1. Hiritsu Coffee Roastery

hiritsu coffee roastery cafe in jb

If you’re looking for a chill hangout away from the city buzz, Hiritsu Coffee Roastery is a must-visit. Just a 15-minute drive from JB CIQ, this highly rated cafe opens earlier than most, at 9am daily. You can see the baristas at work, crafting the crowd-favourite Shaddock Gathered (RM18) from scratch.

There are both sweets and savouries on the menu, such as Bring Me Go Croffle (RM20), perfect as a dessert: crispy croffle topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a finger biscuit, finished with a drizzle of chocolate sauce. There are two other variations of the same dessert in Matcha (RM25) and Beret (RM20).

2. Re Patisserie

Simple and minimalist—these two words best capture Re Patisserie, a popular cafe just a 14-minute drive from the checkpoint. It specialises in elegant, house-made desserts and offers a seasonal menu that changes throughout the year.

For fruit-focused desserts, try the Cyberpunk (RM26) or Mac Face (RM26). The former pairs chocolate and grapefruit, while the latter combines nuts with raspberries. If you prefer tea-infused treats, the Wakatake (RM25) does the trick, as it stars matcha, white sesame, and rice flour.

The Salmon Ochazuke (RM30++) and Mentaiko Tamagoyaki Sando (RM20++) are two of the most popular items from the Japanese-themed menu. The former is served with a grilled salmon topped with sea salt flakes and seaweed powder, short-grain rice, and a cup of matcha-based broth to pour over your dish. We recommend pairing this with the refreshing Watermelon Matcha Iced Latte (RM17++), a unique concoction of creamy matcha latte and sweet watermelon juice.

Sunday Morning Coffee Shop is a hidden cafe tucked on the second floor, away from the bustling streets. Just a 14-minute drive from JB CIQ it makes for the perfect stop—whether you’re unwinding after crossing the border or grabbing a quick meal before heading home.

We recommend the Hot Sando with Curry (RM26), which comes with house-made chicken curry that’s slow-cooked with mushrooms and chicken, along with an egg and ham toast, and a side of salad. It’s a must to get the Hand Drip (from RM13) here, too, ranging from light to dark roast, depending on what you like. Finally, end your meal on a sweet note with the Banana Brownie (RM17): a house-made, gooey banana brownie topped with vanilla ice cream.

After a 14-minute drive from the checkpoint, you will arrive at Space Cafe, where a display of house-made viennoiserie greets you. Some steady sellers include the classic Croissant (RM9), Ham & Cheese Croissant (RM14.50), and even a Mango Danish (RM15).

Pastries aside, the drinks menu has a lot of interesting options. There’s the Orange Americano (RM18) for a tangy-bitter combination, or the Caramel Biscotti Coffee (RM18), a dessert-like drink featuring house-made caramel biscuits for added sweetness. If hot coffee is your thing, consider the Caramel Cinnamon Cafe Latte (RM18) instead.

You can get a plate of Pacific Nasi Lemak Chicken Tender (RM10.90++) to keep you full throughout the day, but what really made an impression on us was the Pacific Mushroom Chicken Mala Pan Mee (RM13.90++). This dish features chewy noodles tossed in a sweet-savoury sauce, topped with minced chicken, veggies, and a soft-boiled egg. We enjoyed the noodles with a cup of Iced Pacific Kopi (RM5.30++), which boasted just the right amount of sweetness.

7. Nimmies Pastry Cafe

nimmies pastry cafe

A 12-minute drive from the customs gets you to Nimmies Pastry Cafe, where you can soak in Bali vibes at this two-storey mansion. It’s one of the most spacious cafes we’ve been to on our trip, probably housing at least 70 customers at once.

Start with the Crombolloni, available in four flavours: Nutella (RM22++), Taro (RM20++), Pistachio Berry (RM24++), and Kinder Bueno (RM23++). We recommend Taro for a mellowed sweetness, and Pistachio Berry for a combination of tart and nutty. Then, move on to savouries; we recommend the Chicken Cutlet Green Pesto Tagliatelle (RM38++), featuring a slab of crispy chicken cutlet fried upon order.

8. KACJ Coffee

kacj-coffee-yam-toast

KACJ Coffee isn’t as popular as many of the cafes mentioned on this list, but it deserves a shoutout for the freshly baked pastries and delicious drinks. It’s only a 10-minute drive from the causeway, making it one of the most convenient coffee spots in JB as well.

kacj-coffee-drinks

We tried the Yam Mochi Toast (RM13) with a cup of Hojicha Latte (RM16) and Homemade Salted Caramel Macchiato (RM16). The toast was decent, but what really stood out to us was the Hojicha Latte—it was slightly sweet, earthy, toasty, and not too milky. In hindsight, the drinks would have paired better with the Sea Salt Butter Roll (RM5.90), as the Yam Mochi Toast was a tad cloying towards the end.

Start with the classic Pulled Benny (RM30+) or get the well-loved Pot-a-tato Rosti (RM32+). The former features a slice of sourdough toast topped with pulled chicken, poached egg, pickled cabbage, and hollandaise with a generous serving of hummus on the side. If you’re dining in, get the filled bagels—Smashed Avocado (RM26.90++), Spicy Butter Milk Chicken (RM27.90++), and Truffle Mushroom (RM32.90++) are just some examples. We especially enjoyed the avo one, as it came slathered with sriracha chilli mayo, stacked with a hashbrown, egg, and sliced cheddar cheese. For bagels to bring home, choose from over 10 flavours with both sweet and savory options, including Black Sesame (RM7++), Local Pickled Chilli (RM7++), and Purple Sweet Potato (RM8++)
