New High-Protein DIY Froyo Shop Opens In Bugis—Here’s Our Review

Back in the early 2010s, I self-proclaimed myself the number one Sogurt fan, obsessed with its self-service, pay-by-weight concept. Inevitably, when multiple Yo-Chi outlets started opening islandwide, I quickly became a regular. Recently, though, I heard about Yogeek, a new self-service froyo shop that just opened on Haji Lane. As a longtime froyo enthusiast, I had to head down and check it out for myself.

FYI: For photobooth fans, Yogeek’s co-founder also founded Solace Studios!

Food at Yogeek

Yogeek’s menu is pretty straightforward: choose from four flavours—Original, Biscoff, Mango, or Acai—pile on your toppings, then weigh your bowl. The total price is dependent on how much you scoop, at a fixed rate of $4.50/100g.

The frozen yoghurt at Yogeek is different from those you may see in other froyo shops. They use high-quality Greek yoghurt to make their froyo, giving it a slightly tart flavour and a high protein content. A 150g serving of their Original flavour contains 9.8g of protein, according to the brand.

To zhng up your bowl, there are over 30 toppings to choose from, ranging from fruits to crumbles and sauces. If you’re calculating calories, Yogeek has you covered: each serving spoon is exactly one standard tablespoon, making it easier to track how much you’re taking. To make things easier, Yogeek has printed the relevant nutritional information, so you won’t have to second-guess.

During our visit, we went for a bowl of Original flavour and another of Mango. We paid $11.33 for the former, but did not weigh the latter.

yogeek-salt

The recommended pairing for the Original froyo is sea salt and olive oil. At first, I was a bit sceptical, but it honestly worked really well. The sea salt contrasted the froyo’s subtle sweetness, and the olive oil added a layer of fruitiness that complemented the slight tang of the yoghurt. Overall, the pairing tasted very clean, without the cloying sweetness you get from some other brands.

We also tried their Chocolate Brownie. I will die on the hill that a perfect brownie should be fudgy, not cakey, and this brownie checks all my boxes. It had a deep, rich chocolate flavour and was fudgy without being too dense.

yogeek-cookie

I also really enjoyed the Scoopable Cookie. It was gooey in the centre yet had crunchy edges, which paired perfectly with the froyo’s soft consistency. It wasn’t too sweet either. I recommend letting it soak in the melted froyo for a while so it can fully absorb the froyo’s flavours.

For a Southeast Asian twist, their Thai Sticky Rice is also worth trying. It had a subtle coconut flavour reminiscent of the original Thai dessert. If you’re getting this, pair it with tart fruits such as strawberries or mangoes to cut through the richness.

yogeek-pistachio

Dubai chewy cookie aficionados like me will be glad to know there’s also a Pistachio Kunafa topping. The kunafa was still satisfyingly crunchy and had a strong pistachio flavour. Though we didn’t try this ourselves, online reviews recommend pairing it with their Toasted Pistachio and Dark Chocolate Sauce for a Dubai chewy cookie dupe.

We also tried their mango froyo with the owner’s recommended toppings: Strawberry, Mango, Strawberry Granola, Toasted Coconut Flakes, and White Chocolate Sauce.

This combination is perfect for anyone looking for a refreshing dessert to beat the heat. The mango froyo had a natural sweetness that paired well with the slightly sour strawberry and mango chunks. The strawberry granola and coconut flakes added a much-needed crunch, while the white chocolate tied the bowl together. Pro tip: Leave the white chocolate on the froyo for a while, and you get a crisp chocolate coating!

My only gripe with the whole bowl is that the mango froyo itself was a tad too soft and watery.

Ambience at Yogeek

The space is decked out in Greek decor that transports you to Santorini, with a contemporary royal blue and off-white colour palette. It’s also well-lit, not only from the abundant light sources within the store, but also from natural light streaming through the windows. The interior is clean and cool, though the space is compact, so expect it to get a little squeezy during peak hours.

Yogeek is located in Haji Lane, a six-minute walk from Bugis MRT Station.

Here’s my opinion on which of the two self-serve froyo shops reigns superior: Yo-Chi or Yogeek. Personally, I prefer Yogeek’s froyo because it has that distinct yoghurt tang and is less sweet. I also enjoy how much fresher the ingredients taste at Yogeek. However, Yo-Chi offers a wider variety of toppings at a lower price. Nonetheless, I’d still recommend Yogeek if you’re looking for a cleaner-tasting sweet treat.

If you’re looking for more desserts nearby, just a four-minute walk away is Aureffle cafe, selling viral waffle “sandwiches” with ice cream. Otherwise, check out our guide to the best Haji Lane food places to find more eats in the area.
