Raffles Place lunch crowd: there’s a new onigiri option in the basement. Tokyo Onigiri, a Japanese rice ball specialist, recently opened its first Singapore outlet at One Raffles Place, with onigiri starting from $4.90. The shop is takeaway only, and the mall connects directly to Raffles Place MRT Station, so it’s an easy grab on the way back to the office.

For the uninitiated, Tokyo Onigiri is the overseas arm of Ichiryu Manpuku, a Tokyo-based onigiri specialist founded by Yuka Hayakawa in 2023. The original Tokyo outlet is known for its fluffy, lightly shaped onigiri, with around 20 fillings to choose from. Its bestseller is the Grilled Salmon and Salmon Roe Onigiri (¥650). The brand has since expanded to Mongolia and Taiwan, with Singapore marking its sixth outlet.

Ordering takes three steps. First, pick your format: the 2-Onigiri Set Meal (from $13.90), the 3-Onigiri Set Meal (from $18.80), or a la carte onigiri (from $4.90). These prices are for Classic fillings. Popular, Signature, Premium, and Double Fillings upgrades are available for a higher price.

Next, choose your fillings. You can mix up to two fillings in a single onigiri. Finally, set meals come with a choice of miso soup or a canned drink, plus a side of pickled cucumber or pickled daikon.

If you’re not sure what to pick, start with the shop’s six featured combinations. The cheapest in this series are the Soy Glazed Meat & Soy Marinated Egg Yolk ($7.90) and the Kimchi Pork & Soy Marinated Egg Yolk ($7.90).

Three combinations sit at $8.90 each: the Sukiyaki & Soy Marinated Egg Yolk ($8.90), the Salmon Mayo with Yuzu Kosho & Mentaiko ($8.90), and the Hotate Soy Butter & Mentaiko ($8.90). The priciest is the Roasted Salmon & Ikura ($9.90).
Do note that the kiosk is takeaway-only, so you’ll have to dabao your onigiri back to the office if you’re grabbing lunch.
