While I enjoy a fine dining experience now and then, nothing beats the comfort of warm, freshly prepared street food, ready to be savoured on the spot. That’s exactly what Dhivya Sree envisioned when she brought the vibrant flavours of Chennai to TNM Hidden Cafe in KL.

The New Madras began as a humble stall in Kampung Kasipillay along Jalan Ipoh in 2023, inspired by Dhivya’s travels to Chennai. The name itself — “Madras,” the former name of the Indian city — pays homage to its rich street food culture. Her deep love for these dishes led her to open TNM Hidden Cafe in Brickfields last year.
While the word “hidden” may feel overused in the food scene, TNM Hidden Cafe truly lives up to its name — tucked inside a gadget and vape shop near Little India. Seating is scarce, and meals are served fresh from their food truck parked just outside this cosy nook.

Adding to its hole-in-the-wall appeal is the cafe’s simple yet affordable menu. The star of the show? Budget Madras Biryani, with prices starting at just RM7.70 for the Egg Biryani. For something heartier, go for the Chicken Biryani or Chicken 65 Biryani (both RM9.80), or indulge in the Mutton Biryani (RM15.40).

For a quick, grab-and-go bite, their RM1 snack selection (available from 2pm onwards) is perfect. Choose from Samosa, Karipap, Vadai, Kesari, or Pachai Payiru Urunde — all easy, appetising treats.

These delightful finger foods pair beautifully with a Masala Tea (RM2/RM3), served in the classic small tea-glass. For something more indulgent, try TNM Hidden Cafe’s signature Rose Milk (RM6), also available as a milkshake or frappe.
Adding to the series is the Rosemilk Bun — a soft bun covered in a layer of rose syrup-infused condensed milk and topped with a generous drizzle of the same velvety mixture.
The New Madras’ journey is just beginning. From a humble stall to a cafe, this rising star is set to expand beyond KL — perhaps even beyond Malaysia.
