Nasi Lemak Tanglin can be considered an institution when it comes to nasi lemak in KL – it’s been around since 1948 and is currently managed by the third generation. They have since opened more branches across Klang Valley to ensure Nasi Lemak Tanglin is accessible to all.
I usually do a takeaway from the original branch at Kompleks Makanan Tanglin. My father in-law would usually go there for some teh tarik and would bring home a packet of nasi lemak for me to enjoy at home.

They open as early as 7am so it’s best to go early as the food was cold by the time I arrived at 10.30am
The crowd at Nasi Lemak Tanglin is unpredictable – sometimes the queue is long and sometimes, not so. Fortunately, there wasn’t a long time when Jien and I decided to dine there recently so I went all out with my order; nasi lemak ayam berempah with a portion of sambal sotong, bergedil and fried egg.
I’ve always liked the sambal sotong at Nasi Lemak Tanglin but of late, I find the texture a bit tough. Sambal flavour is sweetish and spicy, which is their standard. On good days, you’ll get tender cuttlefish but on this visit, texture was unfortunately a bit chewy.

Fried chicken fat with squid sambal and grilled
The ayam goreng berempah is nicely seasoned but I wished it was served piping hot rather than warm. Chicken texture is alright – neither juicy nor dry. Nasi Lemak Tanglin does ayam masak merah better I feel, so opt for that instead.
Rice was a tad cold since it was prepared in the morning, so it wasn’t as lemak or indulgent. If you opt for takeaway, warm it up in a microwave and it will be nice and fluffy again. Skip the fried egg unless you like your sunny side up cold and rubbery.

Prices are still reasonable and portion is good
Overall, I’ve had better from Nasi Lemak Tanglin. Perhaps it was an off-day for them but the nasi lemak was average at best. If you’re looking to dine in comfort, go to the branch in Damansara Heights. There’s also a better display system so the food is piping hot or at the very least, warm.

Ambiance: 5/10
Price: 6.5/10
Food: 5.5/10 (halal)
Verdict: Old school nasi lemak but they’ve been a bit inconsistent of late. The Damansara Heights branch is better, I feel.
