1. Acha Curry House

This is the spot where local PJ-ians come to satisfy their banana leaf cravings. It’s best known for its authentic and traditional South Indian dishes, such as fried tenggiri fish, salted fish curry, and their specialty, sambal ikan bilis. Another great thing about this place is that you can help yourself to four types of vegetables and curries at no extra charge. Expect the queue to start as early as 11:30 a.m., and note that parking is limited—so plan ahead if you’re visiting.

2. Puchong Chettinad Mess

Set on the first floor of a row of shop lots in Bandar Puteri Puchong, this place is a hidden gem for banana leaf lovers. It began as a family-run catering business (which is still operating) and has since expanded into a must-try banana leaf spot. Their mutton varuval and fried squid are among their specialties. Meals start from RM10, and they even offer a special briyani dish on weekends.

P.S. The tables are arranged in a canteen-style layout, and seating can be limited.

Not sure what to eat in Seksyen 17, PJ? Then you should check out this spot—some Google reviews even call it “one of the best banana leaf rice in PJ.” Their mutton masala, fried squid, and refillable vegetables are part of the reason people keep coming back. They’ve also recently started serving naan and tandoori chicken from 6 p.m. onwards. While the space isn’t air-conditioned, it’s quite breezy thanks to the greenery-filled interior, and it offers spacious seating.

4. Madurai Muniyandi Villas

Located on the first floor of the popular Brickfields food court at Kompleks Tun Sambanthan, this place is truly a gem—especially for those who can eat a lot! They serve a massive banana leaf meal in the Thiruvilla Sapadu style, which can be shared by 3–4 people. All dishes are cooked to order using the owner’s family secret recipes. You’ve got to try their seafood varuval, which includes crab, squid, and prawns, as well as their spicy chicken varuval. Yummy in the tummy!

Looking for a budget banana leaf meal in PJ? Kavitha Banana Leaf is the place for you. A vegetarian banana leaf set is priced for only RM8 with unlimited veggie, rice and condiment. They’ve been around since 1974 and has been making customers happy with their over 70 types of homecooked South Indian dishes. Try their fried bitter gourd onion, mutton varuval, and fish puttu (shark fish). This place has three outlets across PJ with one of them being in a food court.

Maya @ Bangsar is a family run restaurant that prides itself on their authentic home-cooked Indian food that’s passed down from generation to generation. Pair your rice with their thick salted fish curry and crab curry. As for the side dishes, try their fried chicken and mutton varuval for extra goodness to your meal. Since it’s located at Jalan Telawi, Bangsar parking can be difficult but so worth it!

They are most famous for their high pressure Fried Chicken to accompany your meal. It’s super tender, juicy and a shame if you don’t order it. Don’t sleep on their banana leaf set too as they offer delicious veges and curries as well. They have a few outlets across PJ and KL so options are endless for you to try this spot.
