1. Lawa Bintang
Treat yourself to Lobster Nasi Lemak ($25) at Muslim-owned eatery Lawa Bintang. The lobster meat here is fresh and juicy, and comes layered with three types of cheese. It’s then garnished with herbs for added flavour. The best way to enjoy the nasi lemak here is to have a bite of lobster with a spoonful of their fragrant nasi lemak and crunchy ikan bilis, and then dip everything into their stellar sambal. If you’d like something less extravagant, get their Fried Sotong Nasi Lemak ($12) instead. Not only is it one of the most ordered items, but it’s also great value for its portion.

2. The Only Burger
The last time we went to The Only Burger, we were impressed by their bestseller, The Oklahoma Beef Burger ($9.50 for single/$12.50 for double). What makes this burger special is that it comes with heaps of fried onions atop a tender, juicy beef patty. Just a word of caution: it’s a saucy burger slathered with three house-made sauces, so only get this if you don’t mind a messy eating experience. Otherwise, The Spicy Chicken Burger ($9.10) is a great alternative; this burger comes packed with a crispy fried chicken thigh, a house-made spicy and garlic mayo sauce, and veggies.

3. Little Tokio
Little Tokio is an under-HDB izakaya serving up affordable yakitori and teppanyaki till 10pm daily. We recommend The Ikayaki ($19.90+), a hearty meal consisting of a huge grilled squid and fried rice. Each slice of squid was tender yet chewy, and we particularly enjoyed the sweet teriyaki sauce when mixed with the fried rice. If you prefer meat to seafood, consider getting the Wagyu Beef Steak ($24.90+) instead; the hotplate of meat comes with a caramelly, garlicky sauce that cuts through any greasiness of the beef.

Located just across the MRT Station is Three’s A Crowd, a cosy cafe that sells gelato, waffles, cakes and more. It’s a must to get their Churros Waffles ($8), a toasty, crunchy treat that’s extra sweet thanks to the sugar bits. Alternatively, get a scoop of their gelato priced from $4.50 if you’d like something simple or on the go. Some popular flavours here include Speculoos and Roasted Pistachio.

You can also choose between chicken and seafood for the soup. Complete your meal with spicy-tangy Mango Salad ($7.90) or Steamed Sea Bass in Chilli Lime ($33.90) if you don’t mind spending a little more.

Simple bowls of noodles from hawker stalls make comforting food that won’t hurt your bank account. Xing Ji is a great example, where you can enjoy springy wonton mee and mushroom noodles. Wake up earlier if you’re planning to drop by, as the queue starts snaking during peak hours. Get a hearty bowl of Wanton Mee ($5/$6/$7) made of egg noodles and slices of char siew with sweet and savoury black sauce. Here’s a tip: dip the dumplings into sambal for an added fiery kick. Otherwise, consider getting the Mushroom Noodles ($5/$6), an all-time favourite among regulars.

Spot Yummy Sarawak Kolo Mee at Tampines Round Market & Food Centre. You’ll see the stall from afar by its bright yellow signboard. As its name suggests, their signature dish would be their Sarawak Kuching Kolo Mee (from $5). Unlike the usual egg noodles, they only use egg whites to make theirs. The noodles are mixed with black sauce and topped with pieces of wonton, deep-fried wonton, braised pork ribs, char siew and veggies. Be warned that their chilli packs a punch so prepare your tissue packet and drinks. For its quality and quantity, this definitely offers bang for your buck.
