Tan Bee Hua, owner of popular kueh tutu store Tan’s Tu Tu Coconut Cake, has died aged 63.
The stall, located at Havelock Food Centre, took to social media on Tuesday (July 29) to announce the news.
“She always loves her job and took pride in perfecting her tu tu kuehs to contribute to Singapore’s rich food heritage. She will always live in our memories,” the caption read.
The post was accompanied by a black-and-white photo of Bee Hua working at the stall.
Jacky Tan, nephew to Bee Hua, confirmed with AsiaOne that his aunt passed away last night. He said that although she had been ill for a few years, her death was unexpected.
The third-generation hawker added: “She left behind a legacy of one of the best tu tu kueh in Singapore.”
Tributes and condolences have poured in online since the store’s announcement, including from well-known food establishment Haig Road Putu Piring and owner of Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck And Kway Chap Melvin Chew.
Melvin mentioned that Tan’s Tu Tu Coconut Cake was his all-time favourite and he was sad to announce her passing.
The hawker added: “A legend in making tu tu kueh, her passion in making tu tu kueh is a great contribution to our hawker culture.”
Tan’s Tu Tu Coconut Cake has been churning out handmade tu tu kuehs since 1932. As of the time of writing, its future is still unknown.
A second-generation owner, Bee Hua took over the stall after her late brother died.
