The reason for the stall’s popularity is simple: the food has managed to retain its super affordable prices and charming home-cooked flavours over the years.

But exactly how affordable is Lai Heng’s fare? Well, the cheapest plate of cai png here—which consists of one meat and one vegetable dish—will set you back just $2.30. For two meats and one vegetable, you only need to pay $2.90.
In an age where cai png with no more than three dishes can cost upwards of $4, Lai Heng’s prices are value-for-money.
Some popular dishes at Lai Heng include gu lou yok, AKA sweet-and-sour pork, and scrambled eggs. We got two $2.90 plates, one with the aforementioned ingredients, alongside stir-fried long beans. For the price, we were satisfied with our meal and had no major gripes.
For easy access, the stall is about a 20-minute walk from Toa Payoh MRT Station. Alternatively, you can take a five-minute bus ride, where you will alight at Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre.
