Chef Leung’s Soup Dumplings has coriander xiao long bao

While Chinatown Complex is home to a few xiao long bao stalls, Chef Leung’s Soup Dumplings is the only one offering this curious rendition: Coriander Xiao Long Bao ($3.50 for three pieces).

Some readers may be aghast at the idea of adding coriander to the iconic dumpling dish. But if it’s any consolation, the stall’s owner, the titular Chef Leung, was a former Raffles Hotel chef. He also owns Chef Leung’s Authentic Hand-milled Rice Noodle Rolls in the same hawker centre.

So, how does the coriander xiao long bao taste? As someone who’s not a particularly big fan of the herb, I found it to be quite good. The fresh, earthy notes of coriander complemented the minced pork well, and the broth—light yet savoury—was the cherry on top.

While we were drawn to the coriander xiao long bao, the signature dish here is the Signature Soup Dumplings ($4.50 for four pieces). Unlike the smaller xiao long bao, these are its larger, older brother, known in Chinese as “tangbao”. While the dough wrapping was a little thicker than we would have liked, the clear and flavourful soup was decent, and the pork filling proved succulent and tasty.

Aside from dumplings, the stall also has a few noodle dishes, including Scallion Noodles ($4) and Pork Fillet Scallion Noodles ($6.50).
