When it comes to exploring the best homegrown F&B concepts, few places rival New Bahru in River Valley. Nestled within the former Nan Chiau High School campus, the lifestyle destination is home to an impressive lineup of local brands, including Orh Gao Peh Gao, which is well worth seeking out for its elevated local fare and carefully curated craft beer selection.

Located in the Dining Hall at New Bahru’s Factory Block extension, this is the brand’s second outpost, following the opening of its flagship branch at Serene Centre in 2019. Operating as an all-day eatery, the space features bar seating alongside communal tables, creating a warm setting for both intimate meals and larger gatherings.

Starting at 9am, they serve a dedicated breakfast menu before expanding to its full all-day menu from 11am, featuring mains, shareable plates, and a selection of 14 rotating taps pouring Singapore craft beers.

As the only F&B kiosk serving breakfast at the Factory Block, Orh Gao Peh Gao is your go-to spot if you’re here early in the morning. Choose from five varieties of traditional toast, including Sugar Butter, Peanut Butter, and Kaya Peanut Butter ($2.80+ each). For a more complete meal, top up $3.50+ to make it a breakfast set, which comes with two soft-boiled eggs and a hot drink.

Our pick of the bunch, however, was the Kaya Toast. The kaya is made fresh in-house, giving it a rich pandan fragrance and luscious consistency, while the thin-sliced toast allows it to take centre stage. This allows the sweetness of the kaya to come through more prominently, while the butter adds an indulgent layer of richness and creaminess.

Come lunchtime, you can find a few New Bahru-exclusive dishes, the most notable being the Hokkien Mee Tai Mak ($18+), a creative rework of the beloved local classic. Instead of the usual combination of yellow egg noodles and rice vermicelli, it features plump, bouncy mee tai mak, giving the hawker staple more chew.

The thicker noodles allow the savoury broth to cling to each strand, ensuring every bite is packed with plenty of umami. All the familiar elements are still present, including a generous serving of prawns, fish cake, crispy pork lard, and sambal belacan, coming together to deliver a satisfying mix of flavours and textures.

Another dish worth trying is the Tobiko Prawn Fried Rice ($12+), which arrives in a vibrant bowl that’s every bit as appetising as it looks. Each grain of fried rice is beautifully distinct and infused with smoky wok hei, while the unmistakable egg fragrance lends an added layer of richness.

What impressed us most was the quality of the prawns, which were plump, juicy and naturally sweet, cutting through the richness of the fried rice. The tobiko pearls added another layer of seafood flavour with their subtle brininess and delicate pop-in-your-mouth feel. At the same time, the sambal provided a punchy kick that brought all the elements together.

Sharing plates are available here too, with the Chimichurri Pork Chop ($15+) being one of the more popular picks. Expertly grilled, the pork chop boasts deep smoky flavours, while the chimichurri sauce lends a zesty tang and fresh garlicky notes that complement the meat nicely.

We also tried the Chicken Skewer Salad ($13+), which came with two generously sized skewers of tender chicken that reminded us of Japanese izakaya fare. It was served alongside a refreshing Vietnamese-style salad tossed in a peanut and chilli-garlic dressing.

Drinks-wise, we went for the Yuzu Lager ($17+), a crisp lager infused with bright citrusy notes from the yuzu. It struck a pleasant balance between the beer’s subtle malty sweetness and the fruit’s vibrant tartness, making it a nice accompaniment to the meal.

One of the most unique drinks on the menu is the Kaya Toast Cocktail ($19+), a creative nod to Singapore’s iconic breakfast dish. It blends fragrant, nutty pandan-infused whisky with velvety coconut cream, while the gula melaka lends a deep sweetness that recreates the familiar flavours of kaya toast.

While Orh Gao Peh Gao’s offerings come at a slight premium compared to your typical food court fare, we’re happy to report that the extra cost is well justified by the creativity and quality of the dishes. Whether you’re looking for a casual meal or after-work drinks, this all-day concept is a must-visit the next time you’re at New Bahru!
