Travelling to Japan? Theme parks including Disney, Universal Studios are raising ticket prices

Going to Japan soon? You may want to set aside a little more for your trip, as a number of theme parks across the country are raising their ticket prices.

According to a 2026 survey by research company Teikoku Databank, 32 of the 101 amusement parks in Japan have increased admission fees as of July.

Many have adopted dynamic pricing systems, where ticket prices vary depending on factors such as day of the week, season and demand.

The changes can also be seen at some of Japan’s most popular theme parks.

One of them is Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka, which has revised its ticket pricing system for park admissions from Sept 1.

In a statement on June 30, the theme park announced that ticket prices will be adjusted daily based on demand, beginning with tickets sold from July 1.

USJ recommends purchasing tickets “as early as possible” to secure the best deal as prices for the same admission date may increase overtime.

And while fluctuating prices are nothing new over at Tokyo Disney Resort — which adopted a dynamic pricing system since 2021 — visitors may have noticed that it has gotten more costly to visit its theme parks including Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea.

Just last month, the resort’s operator Oriental Land announced that it would raise the maximum price of a one-day adult ticket by up to 1,500 yen (S$12) from October, allowing admission fees to go up to as high as 12,400 yen, reported Japan’s Kyodo News.

This is the theme parks’ first price hike in three years.

Similar to USJ, ticket prices for Tokyo Disney Resort’s theme parks vary based on day of the week, season and demand.

A spokesperson for Oriental Land said: “Rising labour and administrative costs are becoming a burden.”

These are reflected in Teikoku Databank’s survey findings. The price increases are attributed to rising operational expenses including electricity and labour costs.

Looking ahead, the research company expects leisure ticket prices to “continue rising beyond 2026”.

Instead of across-the-board price hikes often seen in the past, it expects operators to focus on “flexible pricing strategies”.

These include expanding the range of higher-value ticket options, variable pricing as observed in USJ and Tokyo Disney Resort, as well as special rates for tourists, all of which would “help ensure profitability”, it said.
