Choon Guan Hainan Coffee

Choon Guan Hainan Coffee

FoodMalaysia

I’ve heard good things about Choon Guan Hainan Coffee in Klang and finally made my way over to their outlet in Bukit Raja recently. There was already a queue when we arrived slightly past 10.30am, but we got a table within 15 minutes.

Already-paid meals for those in need

You’re given a menu to browse through, and ordering (and payment) is done at the counter. I like how Choon Guan Hainan Coffee has a section of already paid meals to help those in need. Our friends who joined us said food quality is similar to Choon Guan Hainan Coffee in Port Klang, but ambiance at Bukit Raja is more modern.

Hainan Bun Set

We ordered the Hainan Bun Set (RM10.10) which came with soft boiled eggs and coffee. Bun is light and crisp, and the coffee is aromatic. I suggest getting the coffee hot as you can better taste the thickness and flavour.

Hainan Kampung Chicken Rice Ball (large)

Hainan Kampung Chicken Rice Ball (small)

I’m generally not a fan of chicken rice but I’m quite impressed with the Hainan Kampung Chicken Rice Ball (RM13.10 – small, RM25 – large). Rice is fluffy yet holds its texture well despite being shaped into balls. Chicken is firm and smooth with a nicer bite, and there’s a good hint of ginger and scallion in the mix.

Hainan Chicken Chop

A classic done well

Choon Guan Hainan Coffee’s chicken chop is the reason why I’ve been wanting to visit, and it did not disappoint. Gravy is savoury, sweet and tangy with good flavour from the caramelised onions and Worcestershire sauce. The fried boneless chicken leg is juicy and tender; and still retained its crispy exterior with the sauce coating.

Curry Laksa Chicken

Curry Laksa Chicken (RM14.80) is spice-forward and adequately thick, though I feel this spice combo isn’t quite my cup of tea. That said, it’s a decent bowl of curry laksa with a good amount of chicken for protein.

Custard Pudding

I like the Custard Pudding (RM3.50) here – it reminds me of the ones we get in Ipoh and I reckon this one holds a candle to the Ipoh ones. Creamy, eggy and smooth with a delicious caramel layer; a good way to end a meal.

Overall, I find the food at Choon Guan Hainan Coffee quite decent. Both the Hainan chicken chop and kampung chicken rice are worth trying, and service at the Bukit Raja outlet is friendly and efficient.
