Hou’s Kopitiam in Kuchai is fairly new, a branch of popular Hou’s Kopitiam in Cheras. It gets really crowded during lunch hours so expect to wait a bit for a vacant table. We popped by for lunch on a Sunday and there were no available tables despite arriving slightly before noon.

Cosy interior

Fortunately, we were seated within 5 minutes. The predominant language used is Mandarin but the menu is bi-lingual and the staff can converse in English. The salted butter coffee (RM5) is quite good – thick and strong with a savoury finish from the butter. I’ve always liked my coffee to be salted so this one is up my alley.

Curry roasted pork noodle

Mee Sg Lembing

I opted for Mee Sg Lembing as my choice of noodles for the curry roasted pork noodle (RM12.90). There’s also a premium version (queen) where you’d get char siew, siew yuk, chicken and cockles in the bowl. Curry broth is rich and adequately spicy which I find pretty decent, but the noodles didn’t really taste like the Sg Lembing noodles I’m accustomed to.

Cheese-baked chicken rice with black pepper sauce

Saucy and cheesy

Hou’s Kopitiam’s cheese-baked chicken rice with black pepper (RM18.90) is saucy and has a good dose of black pepper bits for the added oomph. Chicken is tender and there’s a good amount of cheese on top for richness and pull.

Pork belly slice noodles in Sarawak pepper soup

I found the pork belly slice noodles (RM11) average. We opted for the Sarawak pepper soup as the base with bridge noodles. The broth was light and mildly peppery, with a bit of sweetness from the vegetables. I prefer my pepper / pork broth much bolder in flavour, so this isn’t my cup of tea.

Wat dan hor (Cantonese fried kuay teow)

Wat dan hor (RM11.90) isn’t much to shout about but in all fairness, we ordered this for the kids to eat. This was savoury enough and there’s a good amount of gravy, but there was very little wok char.

You might have to wait for a table during peak hours

I spotted a few tables ordering the prawn noodles and toasted breads – will try those the next round. Parking is a bit difficult to find if you’re there during peak hours but you can opt to park near the housing area and walk a little to Hou’s Kopitiam.
