Restoran Simmei Seafood & Steamboat: Al dente roasted pork wanton mee & juicy chicken wings till 2am

Ah, supper… sinful yet irresistible. I have expanded my supper options recently, moving beyond loklok and China-style restaurants. Now, I’m exploring local supper eateries. Restoran Simmei Seafood & Steamboat at Cheras is one of my new discoveries, serving delicious zi char dishes and steamboats that satisfy my hunger pangs at midnight.

One of the reasons I’d visit the restaurant is because of  its convenient location, situated right beside MRT Taman Mutiara. It sprawls across 2 shops, separated by a repair shop in between. Though it stays open till as late as 2am, I still decided to reach at 7pm to ensure that I could sample all of the dishes that I wanted to feature in this article.

I thought I was early, but no— there were already a few tables of patrons waiting for their food to be served. Apparently, their steamboat is popular among diners; I could see a portable stove on almost all the tables.  Mental note – I should try that out next time.

What I tried at Restoran Simmei Seafood & Steamboat

If you check out Restoran Simmei Seafood & Steamboat on social media, you’ll find many mentioning its poor ratings on Google, which stands at 3.5 stars (although it isn’t that bad, I think). One of the dishes that has garnered attention for this restaurant, though, is the Roasted Pork Wonton Mee (RM18). So, without a doubt, I was going to try that.

Upon first glance, the noodles seemed exceptionally springy, adorned with vegetables and a few pieces of roasted pork that appeared slightly charred.

I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into the noodles. And there it was— it had just the perfect al dente texture that I was anticipating! The sauce, watery and leaning towards a salty note, paired extremely well with the noodles.

The roasted pork had a pleasant wok hei; it was fried with garlic and dark sauce, which imparted a mild sweetness. The frying process gave the roasted pork a slightly charred flavour,  enhancing its taste profile and making it overall interesting and enjoyable.

Restoran Simmei Seafood & Steamboat - Chicken wing stall

Another highly-endorsed dish at this eatery was the chicken wing, sold at a stall outside the restaurant. It operates independently from Restoran Simmei Seafood & Steamboat and it doesn’t have a name, so be sure not to overlook it!

The charcoal fire transmitted a hint of smoky flavour into each chicken wing. Its skin was perfectly glazed and grilled, with a light crisp and impeccable level of sweetness. The meat was succulent and flavourful, and I was able to easily tear it off the bone.

Final thoughts

Restoran Simmei Seafood & Steamboat - Chicken wings

My overall dining experience was great. The only thing that surprised me a bit was the price of the chicken wings. All the dishes would make for a perfect supper! I’m keen to revisit the restaurant to try its steamboat offerings as it seemed like a popular choice.

My suggestion if you want to visit them: just take the train. It’s super close— just a 2-minute walk from the MRT, and you’ll find yourself at the stall. Don’t bother driving there since parking is quite limited, unless you’re planning to go at midnight.
