A TikTok user by the name of Kani has recently caught the attention of Malaysians, not for viral dance trends or comedic skits, but for something far more heartwarming — his deep appreciation for Malaysian cuisine. Posting under the handle @kani.boy47, Kani introduced the world to his newly opened restaurant in Tamil Nadu, proudly named Tomyam Malaysia.
Kani’s story begins in Malaysia, where he once lived and worked. During his time here, he developed an interest with the rich, diverse flavours of Malaysian food. So much so that upon returning to his hometown of Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu, he decided to bring a taste of Malaysia with him.
And thus, Tomyam Malaysia was born. Built in June and officially opened to the public in early July, the restaurant is a culinary tribute to the dishes Malaysians know and love.
While tomyam might take top billing on the menu, it’s not the only Malaysian staple you’ll find. Kani has curated a lineup that brings you right back to Malaysia like Nasi Lemak, Nasi Ayam, Mee Sotong, Rojak, Satay, and even Roti Canai.
One look at the restaurant’s signage would remind you of a regular nasi kandar spot tucked somewhere in KL or Penang. Kani shares regular updates on TikTok, offering glimpses into his daily grind, including flipping roti canai and prepping fragrant satay skewers.
In one recent video, he expressed his gratitude to Malaysians for their overwhelming support, speaking fluently in Bahasa Malaysia.
His sincerity and respect for Malaysian food culture have earned him a wave of support online, with many applauding his efforts and encouraging others to stop by if they ever find themselves in Tamil Nadu.
