Wong Seng Kitchen in Taman Desa has been around for quite some time, but Jien and I only recently checked them out after walking past the shop many times. Our first visit was August this year, and we’ve eaten there several times since then.

Air-cond section at Wong Seng Kitchen
Wong Seng Kitchen occupies two shoplots – one alfresco and the other, air-conditioned so dining there is fairly comfortable. You can also opt to sit by the sidewalk if you’re bringing your pet; I’ve seen customers with small dogs dining there so I assume this restaurant is pet-friendly.

A gallery of specialty dishes
On our first visit, we had a quick lunch of fish curry, pumpkin tofu and sweet sour pork, all of which were above average. There’s a friendly uncle who usually takes my order and I find him very accommodating given my poor Chinese pronunciation – he never once rushed me to order nor did he show any signs of frustration when I struggled to enunciate. The lady boss is also very friendly, especially to my little ones.
Some of the notable items we tried are the fish slice curry, buttermilk chicken, yam basket and crabmeat tofu. They also serve pretty good sweet and sour pork and fried onion ring chicken – the latter is tangy and sweet, with more acidity compared to sweet and sour pork.

Fish slice curry
The fish curry (RM45 – small, RM65 – large) at Wong Seng Kitchen is quite good in my opinion – you can opt for either fish head or fish slices, and I like the combination of spices and coconut milk. It’s spice-forward yet creamy, and the vegetables are cooked just enough so they are tender, not mushy.

Crabmeat tofu

Claypot tofu
Pumpkin tofu comes with plenty of gravy, but I like the crabmeat tofu better. The latter is topped with eggy gravy filled with a good amount of crab meat and chopped vegetables (all priced at RM20 – small, RM28 – medium, RM36 – large). We also tried the claypot tofu and sizzling tofu, which were alright, but not particularly memorable as most Chinese restaurants serve this anyway.

On our first visit, we ordered the sweet and sour pork (RM25 – small, RM35 – small, RM45 – large) which was pretty decent and it made us decide to revisit again to try Wong Seng Kitchen’s other dishes. The pork still retained a crispy exterior despite the sweet and sour gravy coating.

Yam basket with three-flavoured pork ribs
Jien and I both enjoy eating yam basket, so we ordered one to try (RM40 – small) – opted for the three-flavoured pork ribs for our protein. The pork ribs were savoury, sweet and well-caramelised. As for the yam basket, it could be fluffier but the exterior is crispy and not too oily.

Fried onion rings chicken
The chicken dishes (RM22 – small, RM32 – medium, RM42 – large) we ordered at Wong Seng Kitchen have all been quite good. We tried the lemon chicken, fried onion ring chicken and buttermilk chicken; each of them uses the same boneless fried chicken leg but topped with different gravy. In terms of preference, I like the buttermilk chicken and fried onion ring chicken.

Lemon chicken

Deep-fried tilapia in sweet sour sauce
Unfortunately, the sweet and sour deep fried tilapia had a strong muddy taste in the belly. Had it not been for that odor, this would have been a fairly decent dish. If you’re planning to order a whole tilapia, I suggest you opt for a stronger sauce base or choose a different fish. We tried the Hokkien mee and Cantonese fried kuay teow in takeaway format but those were average; their Archilles heel if I may say so.

Decent Chinese dishes
Overall, we had good experiences at Wong Seng Kitchen. Most of the dishes we tried are above average and pricing is reasonable. The restaurant is often packed on weekends so if you’re planning to go, I suggest you call ahead to book a table. Especially if you want to sit in the air-conditioned section.
