1. Sakedokoro Eizaburo

This one’s for Japanese food fans: Sakedokoro Eizaburo has XL don and sashimi at affordable prices that won’t break the bank. One of the most popular items is the Mega Chicken Karaage Don ($13.90++), featuring a pile of fried chicken chunks atop a bed of rice. If you’re there for seafood, consider the Unagi Don ($15.90++) or Fujiyama Kaisen Don ($16.90++) instead; the latter comes with uni, crab meat, ikura, diced salmon and seabass sashimi, tamagoyaki, nori, and a dollop of wasabi.

2. Yuen Kee Dumpling

When Yuen Kee Dumpling first opened at Fortune Centre, there was a snaking long queue every day, where diners had to wait an hour just to try the China-famous dumplings. We too had to wait just to get the Shrimp and Vegetables Pork Dumpling with the Viral Mixed Sauce with Chilli Oil La Mian, a hefty portion that only cost us $11.80+. The dumplings were not overly doughy, and packed with just the right amount of pork, sweet shrimp, chives, and black fungus.

You can add on a comforting bowl of Black and White Garlic Chicken Soup ($10) or a hearty plate of Handmade Radish Cake Omelette ($12).

If you’re visiting during lunch or dinner, opt for the Prawn Noodle Soup ($6) or Yang Zhou Fried Rice ($6.50) instead; they are equally popular choices among the regulars.

5. Madness Nasi Lemak

Newly opened Madness Nasi Lemak is known for doling up pork berempah-style nasi lemak, a dish that hails from Kuala Lumpur. It’s not commonly found in Singapore, so we had to drop by and try! The Nasi Lemak Crispy Pork Belly Berempah ($6.90) here features all the staples: coconut rice, sambal, egg, but instead of a fried chicken, you get crispy pork belly slices. For something more robust, we recommend the Nasi Lemak Nyonya Pork Rendang ($8.90), starring a large serving of Nyonya-style pork rendang.
