FYP Cafe is a popular cafe in Somerset by Whiskdom

Orchard and Somerset are filled with cafes and restaurants, but dining in town often comes with a hefty price tag. The next time you’re at Orchard Central, make a pitstop at FYP Cafe, an affordable brunch and dessert spot by homegrown brownie shop Whiskdom.

Located on the fourth floor of the mall, FYP is short for “For You People”. The popular Somerset cafe combines the best of both worlds—savoury and sweet—with a menu featuring loaded bagels and lava bakes!

The mains are divided into three categories: bagels, rice bowls, and pasta. Despite its central location, the prices are surprisingly affordable, with the most expensive dish being the Seafood Tomyum Pasta ($22++).

This bestseller features spaghetti noodles, Hokkaido scallops, and prawns tossed in a zesty tom yum sauce, topped with an onsen egg and tobiko.

The perfectly runny yolk added an extra layer of richness to the spicy and tangy sauce, balancing out the heat from the chilli flakes.

I enjoyed the sweet and plump scallops, but found the frozen prawns a bit lacklustre. Nonetheless, the al dente noodles, soaked in the rich Thai-inspired sauce and topped with the runny egg, were satisfying enough.

When I first tried Whiskdom’s bagel sandwiches at their now-defunct Bugis cafe, I was impressed by how value-for-money they were. The portions were generous for the price, and the house-made bagels were delicious—with a lightly crisp crust and a slightly soft, chewy middle. They provided the perfect canvas for the meaty fillings.

Prices have increased slightly over the two years FYP has been at Orchard Central, but they’re still justifiable given recent inflation. All bagels remain under $20—not bad for a cafe in town.

The Truffle Beef Bagel, which was previously priced at $14.90++ in 2024, is now $17++. Despite the price hike, the beef bagel was still generously sized, with a heaping helping of ribeye beef slices, layered with creamy truffle aioli.

I did have one small gripe: the beef was a tad overdone, making it chewier than I would have liked.

fyp-cafe-bagel-chicken

The Double Tropicana Bagel ($17++) fared better. It comes with not one, but two crispy fried chicken patties, stacked with pineapple slices, lettuce, mayo, and BBQ sauce.

The chicken katsu was crispy and juicy, with the sweet pineapple chunks balancing its meatiness. It was a hearty and indulgent bagel at a great price.

fyp-cafe-rice-bowl

If bagels aren’t your thing, consider FYP Cafe’s selection of rice bowls. We tried the Mentaiko Salmon ($21++), featuring a bed of short-grain rice topped with a slab of baked salmon and torched mentaiko mayo. The bowl was completed with an onsen egg, pickles, bonito flakes, and tobiko.

The salmon fillet was perfectly cooked, with a beautifully pink center. The creamy mentaiko mayo, with its deliciously charred flavour, paired excellently with all the other fixings in the bowl.

There are seven other grain bowls to choose from, including meatier options of Yakiniku Beef ($18++) and Truffle Chicken ($17++).

Those with a sweet tooth will be spoiled for choice with Whiskdom’s array of lava brownies and cookies.

fyp-cafe-cookie

The Matcha Lava Cookie ($6.50++) is my usual go-to for its heavenly pairing of earthy matcha and sweet white chocolate, but they have other flavours such as Original Chunky Chocolate Chip and Hojicha Lava too.

fyp-cafe-smores

Their Gimme Smore Brownie ($6.50++) was another winner; this came with lightly torched marshmallows on top for a stretchy, gooey pull.

fyp-cafe-matcha

In addition to mains and sweets, the cafe offers a decent selection of caffeinated drinks, including the Strawberry Matcha ($8.50++). Unfortunately, this drink was a letdown. Compared to the version I tried in 2024, the matcha latte was too milky and lacked the earthy green tea notes I was hoping for.

fyp-cafe-taro

I enjoyed the Taro Presso ($8.50), which combined taro and milk with a shot of espresso. While it was a bit too milky for my taste—I prefer a stronger coffee—this creamy beverage was well-balanced in flavour and not too sweet.

Ambience at FYP Cafe

The cafe is hidden in a quiet corner at Orchard Central, conveniently connected to Somerset MRT Station.

fyp-cafe-ambience

The cafe is spacious with plenty of seats to choose from. It adopts glamping-esque decor with camping-style chairs and foldable tables, amidst neutral brown tones against minimalistic white walls.

The idea is cute, but we found the seats a little too high for our table, so if you’re dining with older folks, opt for the higher tables instead.
