City Square Mall food guide

My friends who stay along the purple line, AKA the NEL, claim that’s the best train service in Singapore. At the centre of this route lies Farrer Park MRT Station, which opens up into City Square Mall, which has more than 70 dining options. With so many to choose from, it can be hard to decide what to have. To make that decision easier, here are 15 City Square Mall food places you can consider when you’re there next!

1. Lai Lai Taiwan Dining

city square mall - lai lai taiwan casual dining

Lai Lai Taiwan Dining has been around since 2002, after they learned how to make Taiwanese braised beef noodles from the chefs of Sheraton Hotel Taipei, who flew here specially to impart their skills. Till today, their Stew Beef Noodle ($14.90++) are still made with the same recipe, using ingredients imported directly from Taiwan, and noodles that are exclusively made for them.

You can’t have Taiwanese food without trying their Braised Pork Rice ($9.90++), also known as lu rou fan—theirs comes with braised peanuts, a braised egg, and house-made pickled vegetables. For sides, get their Lai Lai Signature Taiwan Pancake ($9.90++) that comes with egg, cheese and pork floss, or their popular Taiwan Popcorn Chicken ($8.90++).

2. Hangkang Pocha

hangkang-pocha-flatlay

Fans of Korean cuisine shouldn’t miss out on Hangkang Pocha. Unlike their other three locations, the one at City Square Mall features a unique three-in-one concept, with a dine-in restaurant, takeaway cafe, and ramyeon library! Better yet, the restaurant offers a complimentary free-flow banchan, including fish cake, Korean sausages, kimchi and more, available with at least one main purchased.

On our visit, we tried their Angus Beef Sotbap ($18.80+): thick slices of New Zealand Angus beef, cooked to a perfect medium rare, served with kimchi fried rice, seaweed, fresh watercress, and a runny egg yolk, all in a sizzling pot. But my personal favourite had to be the Spicy Chicken Feet Tteokbokki Pot ($28.80+), starring chewy tteokbokki and spicy, smoky chicken feet in a hotplate. You also get a serving of freshly steamed rice to roll up into balls and dip in the sauce!

One of their most popular items is the Black Forest ($2.40), which comes with a sweet chocolate frosting and chocolate sprinkles. If you’ve not tried their Swiss rolls before, expect to be wowed by their extra-dense, yet pillowy soft and moist sponge. First-timers should definitely give their Kaya Swiss Roll ($12) a shot, which comes layered with a fragrant, custardy kaya spread. Alternatively, try one of their other popular flavours, including the sweet-savoury Pandan Cheese Swiss Roll ($12), or fruity Mango Swiss Roll ($12). If you’ve got a birthday coming up, we also recommend getting their seasonal Ah Ma’s Kaya Cake ($44), which slathers their specialty kaya between three layers of pandan sponge cake.
