Yew Tee residents can soon look forward to more food options with a hawker centre set to open in the town next year.
Located on the second floor of Heart of Yew Tee — an integrated development near Yew Tee MRT station — the hawker centre will open in the second half of 2027, according to Lianhe Zaobao.
A tender released by the National Environment Agency (NEA) states the hawker centre will span about 3,800 sqm and house 40 cooked food stalls equipped with independent fume extraction as well as washing facilities, the Chinese daily reported.
Additionally, the hawker centre will have about 170 fixed and movable tables, with over 720 seats for diners.
The opening of this hawker centre, a first for the broader Choa Chu Kang region, is something residents have been looking forward to for a long time, they told the Chinese daily.
Housewife Chen Meiying (transliteration), 62, who has lived in Yew Tee for over 20 years said that while there are other coffee shops and food courts nearby, it is difficult to find a table there during peak hours.
She added that she hopes for a more spacious hawker centre to give everyone more dining options.
72-year-old retiree Chen Aiwen (transliteration) told Lianhe Zaobao that several neighbours had pointed out the need for an affordable hawker centre to the area’s Members of Parliament many years ago.
Stating that there has never been a hawker centre in Yew Tee, the retiree said: “We only have shopping mall food courts and coffee shops, and the food is much more expensive than in other hawker centres in Singapore.”
“Even if I take a bus to the Admiralty Hawker Centre to eat, the round-trip fare is still cheaper than eating here.”
He added that he hopes the new hawker centre will not only offer more affordable food options, but also have a clean, hygienic and well-managed environment so residents can eat comfortably.
Another resident, 42-year-old Massitah, a phlebotomist, said that due to her busy work schedule, her family often buys food outside.
However, the selection of halal food nearby is limited and her four children — aged 6 to 16 — are tired of the usual options.
She told the Chinese daily that she is eagerly anticipating for the new hawker centre to introduce a wider range of halal food stalls, as she and her family are currently limited to western and fast food.
In addition to new dining options, Heart of Yew Tee will also offer amenities such as a polyclinic, kidney dialysis centre, shops and senior housing.
It was first announced as part of the Choa Chu Kang rejuvenation plan in 2023.
It was described by MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC at the time Gan Kim Yong as a means to “further enhance our residents’ lives, strengthen our community bonds and make Choa Chu Kang an even better place to live, work and play”.
