1. Karii

Suntec City Japanese Food Guide: 11 Places For Fresh Udon, Souffle Pancakes And More

Karii is a new Okinawan street food restaurant in the basement of Suntec City, and it’s worth a visit if you’ve never tried taco rice before. The dish has its roots in post-WWII Okinawa, created to cater to American troops stationed there. At Karii, the Hokkaido Pork Taco Rice Bowl ($6.80++) is the crowd favourite, featuring freshly steamed Japanese rice, melty cheese, fresh arugula, and minced Hokkaido pork in a savoury-tangy tomato-based sauce. Pair it with the Unagi Kabayaki ($5.50++) or Goya Tempura ($2++), featuring lightly battered bittergourd fritters.

For something more affordable, there’s the Salmon Sushi Platter ($10.50++), which is ideal for sharing. For lunch, the Premium Bento ($26.80++) is a good pick, featuring grilled mackerel, braised beef, mini chirashi don, ebi and vegetable tempura, warabimochi and more.

For matcha lattes, head to Ichigo by Tea Cottage in Suntec City’s basement. Run by a Singapore-based tea specialty retailer, it’s one of the more customisable matcha spots in the mall. Choose from three ceremonial Uji matcha profiles: the umami-rich Kanzeon Megumi, the buttery smooth Amaterasu, and the bold Seiryu Midori, before choosing your preferred matcha intensity, sugar, and milk level. We recommend the Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte (from $7.90) if you’re looking for something umami and tart.

Founded by the “Sanuki Udon Champion” of a Japanese reality cooking show, Tamoya Udon & Tempura boasts 17 outlets across the globe, including three in Singapore at Suntec City, SingPost Centre, and Plaza Singapura. What sets it apart is the fresh udon made with a blend of three Japan-imported flours, hand-pulled daily for a texture that’s firm yet slightly chewy.

A crowd-favourite is the Sanuki Beef Egg Udon ($12.70+), featuring handmade udon topped with a jiggly onsen egg and tender beef slices in a signature bonito soup stock. For something richer, the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Udon ($12.30+) comes with creamy tonkotsu broth, house-made black garlic oil, chashu slices, bamboo shoots, and an ajitama egg.

Each bowl of Chashu Tokyo Mazesoba ($14.80++) is topped with a house-made meat sauce, various chopped aromatics, a semi-cooked egg, and torched chashu. End your meal on a sweet, but not too sweet, note with the Chocolate Pancake (from $13.80++).

The ramen here is also made with a special blend of flour, including Hokkaido wheat, giving it its signature texture and firmness. Their Original ramen goes for $10.90++, but you could go for the spicy HOKKAI JIGOKU Ramen ($13.90++) for a punchier flavour.

Tucked on the second floor of Suntec City, Cafe Usagi Tokyo is a matcha specialty cafe worth a stop for Japanese desserts and drinks. The star of the show is the Signature Mochi Ice Cream ($6), filled with either vanilla or matcha ice cream. We recommend pairing your scoop with an Original Waffle ($6.50), drizzled with maple syrup or kuromitsu. On the drinks front, the Iced Organic Uji Matcha Latte ($8.80) and Iced Hojicha Latte ($8.30) are the straightforward picks, though the Japanese tea selection—including Sencha, Genmaicha, Rose Sencha, and Lavender Hojicha by the pot—is worth trying if you want something more refined.
