Chaleur is a modern French cake shop on the ground floor of Zennith Suites Service Apartments.

The whole menu is free of pork, lard, and alcohol. We tried three of its fruit cakes.

chaleur-atelier-patisserie-mango

First up is the Mango Serai (RM29.80). Its chocolate coating encases vanilla mousse, vanilla sponge, and a mango serai compote. For those who don’t know, serai is the Malay word for lemongrass, though we couldn’t discern a distinct lemongrass flavour.

Mango lovers will be happy to know there are real mango chunks inside. It’s a little on the sweet side, though, especially with the chocolate shell, so it’s a good one to share.

Next up, the Yuzu Pear (RM29.80), shaped to look like a green pear.

This cake comprises vanilla pear parfait and a yuzu pear compote on a vanilla genoise, all wrapped in chocolate.

It was the most refreshing of the three, and less sweet than we expected. The yuzu was a nice touch, though we’d have liked it to come through stronger.

chaleur-atelier-patisserie-coconut

Our favourite was the Coconut Gula Melaka (RM29.80).

Under the chocolate coating are coconut mousse, a Hawaiian pandan coconut layer, and gula melaka pain de Gênes, a French almond sponge. The best part was the real young coconut shreds in the middle. The sponge was a little dry, but the moist, creamy coconut mousse made up for it.

The shop itself is simple, with only a few seats, but it’s clean and works well for a quick dessert stop.

Overall, Chaleur is worth the detour for something unique in JB. Each cake comes to about S$9.20, which is reasonable for this level of workmanship. The shop isn’t far from the checkpoint, so you can dabao a box back to your hotel or even home to SG. Just get them into a fridge as soon as you can, because ours started melting quite fast.
