Bae Sik Dang is a new Korean restaurant in Tanjong Pagar

I’m not usually into K-dramas, but Reply 1988 is still a favourite. Set in the late ’80s, it follows families in a close-knit neighbourhood—something Bae Sik Dang, a recent addition to Tanjong Pagar, brings to mind with its nostalgic, old-school charm. The warm, homey sets in the drama mirror the restaurant’s casual, family-run feel, which almost resembles a neighbourhood eatery in Korea.

The new K-BBQ spot specialises in thin-cut pork belly, best enjoyed with its range of stews, rice, and noodle dishes. K-BBQ fans will know that pork belly comes in varying cuts and thicknesses. Some prefer it thicker and chewier with more bite, while others appreciate the ease of thinly sliced cuts. Here, you get to enjoy the latter, served as a 150g portion of Flash-frozen Pork Belly ($32++), ideal for up to two diners.

Here’s a tip: if you enjoy making ssam—Korean lettuce wraps for grilled meat—use at least two slices of pork belly for the best bite.

A good Korean restaurant is often judged by its banchan, and Bae Sik Dang delivers with a generous spread of side dishes and condiments. Expect the essentials, such as kimchi and rolled omelette, along with fermented soybean paste, sesame oil, wasabi and more for dipping your meat.

My favourite way to end any K-BBQ experience is with the Fried Rice ($12++), typically cooked in the remaining pork belly fat for extra richness. Here, the kimchi fried rice comes topped with shredded seaweed and two sunny-side-ups; an easy, no-fail carb you can never go wrong with.

I recommend sharing a stew with your dining companion, as there’s nothing better than a piping hot broth to cut through all the rich, greasy flavours. There are three options to choose from: Soft Tofu Stew ($20++), Kimchi Stew ($22++), and Soybean Paste Stew ($22++). The latter is my go-to, though I also enjoy the Soft Tofu Stew when I want something with a bit more punch.

Bonus: the restaurant is open until 4am daily, making it a great late-night supper spot in the CBD. As it has only recently opened, a little patience would go a long way if you encounter any teething issues!
