Micro Bakery & Kitchen has sourdough bakes at Serene Centre

We first reviewed Micro Bakery & Kitchen back in 2019, when it was still a hole-in-the-wall bakery that had taken over from The Bakery By Woodlands Sourdough. Even then, it was clear the team had something special going—a humble neighbourhood bakery committed to making everything in-house, from sourdough loaves to pastries.

Since then, I’ve become something of a regular, dropping by roughly once a month and also visiting their other outlets at Red House and Yong Siak Street. I usually come alone, settle into a corner to get some work done, and pick up whatever’s on the bakery’s display counter that day. So on this visit, I was excited to finally sit down and properly try their brunch plates for the first time.

Food at Micro Bakery & Kitchen

We ordered via the QR code at our table. The menu doesn’t come with pictures, so we had to guess a little and hope for the best—a small leap of faith that, for the most part, paid off.

micro bakery tomato tartine

We ordered the Tomato Tartine ($16+), which longtime visitors might recognise as a riff on the old House Ricotta Tartine. We had good things to say about this dish the last time we visited, and many years later, it still holds up.

The dish featured house-made sourdough topped with a generous cloud of ricotta and bright, jammy tomatoes. The ricotta definitely stole the show—despite how thick the layer was, it was still light and airy, making the tartine surprisingly easy to eat.

The jammy tomatoes added just enough acidity to cut through the richness, while the sourdough provided a sturdy base. It had a well-developed crust, with a chewy, open crumb that held up well to the toppings without going soggy.

One small gripe: during our last visit, the tartine came with spinach and basil, which added a herby contrast that we missed this time around. This version leaned more heavily on the tomatoes, with no greens in sight. It’s a minor change, but one that made a difference.

Grilled 4 Cheese Sandwich

I’d been curious about the Grilled 4 Cheese Sandwich ($18+) for a while, and it didn’t disappoint. The star of the show was naturally the cheese, a rich blend of raclette, smoked ricotta, mozzarella, and cheddar that was altogether creamy, nutty, and tangy.

Unlike our last visit, where the cheese pull was underwhelming, this time it was gloriously stretchy and indulgent, without crossing into grease territory. The sourdough used here was a thinner, less crusty wholegrain variant compared to what we had in the tartine, but it still carried that signature sourdough tang we love.

Impressively, the bread stayed airy and bouncy throughout, holding its own against all that melted cheese without going soggy. Meanwhile, the sauerkraut added a pickled zing and mild crunch that cut through the richness nicely.

The house-made tomato jam here was a welcome addition, tasting almost like a spiced tomato soup in jam form, with a subtle sweetness and hint of spices that balanced out the richness of the cheese beautifully.

Lemon Chia Yogurt Cake

For $6+, the Lemon Chia Yogurt Cake came in a generous slice, which immediately earned brownie points. The flavour profile was lovely, with bright lemon notes, flecks of chia seeds that added a subtle earthiness, and a gentle hint of yoghurt tying everything together.

That said, the yoghurt lingered more as a background note, and we wished it had a bit more tang.

Another gripe I had with this cake was the texture, which leaned dry and crumbly when I’d have preferred something more moist. Still, it was an enjoyable dessert overall.

We weren’t planning to order coffee, but my colleague was curious to try the Iced Cappuccino ($7+), prepared with a double shot of espresso. The cappuccino was well-balanced, with a bittersweet note and a creamy finish that made it easy to drink. It also served as a nice palate cleanser for the richer, savoury dishes. It’s not something I’d personally seek out, but good enough that my colleague was satisfied with it.

Ambience at Micro Bakery & Kitchen

micro bakery and kitchen ambience

If you haven’t been to Micro Bakery & Kitchen in a while, be prepared to do a double-take. The space has changed dramatically since our original review. What was once a tiny stand-up spot has since expanded into a full-on cafe roughly five times the size of the original, with indoor seating and an alfresco area out front.

The layout is well thought-out—coffee counter to the left, a bakery display to the right, an in-house kitchen at the back, and a merchandise section right at the entrance. “Micro” is really only in name at this point—they’ve long since grown into a household name among bakery enthusiasts, and the crowds reflect that. We visited on a weekday afternoon and were lucky enough to snag the last table for two outside.

Micro Bakery & Kitchen is about a five-minute walk from Botanic Gardens MRT Station.

Micro Bakery & Kitchen – Eatbook review

Having visited Micro Bakery & Kitchen more times than I can count, it’s not hard to see how they’ve grown from a humble little stand into the household name they are today. In a cafe landscape where new spots are popping up every other week—and the quality can be hit or miss—Micro Bakery has always been a reliable constant.

The food is honest, the bakes are legit, and the craft behind everything they put out is evident. If you’re after something consistent and satisfying rather than just the next trending cafe, this is the place to be!
